Square Enix has officially announced Evercold, the sixth major expansion for Final Fantasy XIV, set to release in January 2027. The reveal came during the keynote presentation at Final Fantasy XIV Fan Festival 2026 in Anaheim, where producer and director Naoki Yoshida introduced players to the next chapter in the game’s evolving narrative.

The upcoming expansion will kick off a new storyline known as the Godless Realms Saga, with the teaser trailer hinting at new regions, challenges, and adventures awaiting the Warrior of Light.

One of the biggest surprises from the announcement is a crossover alliance raid titled “EVANGELION: Ghosts of Desire,” created in collaboration with khara, Inc. The raid draws from the iconic anime franchise Neon Genesis Evangelion, bringing its signature themes and visual style into the world of Final Fantasy XIV.

Major Gameplay Overhaul

Evercold will introduce a significant overhaul to the game’s combat system with two distinct playstyles:

  • Reborn Mode – Builds on the current combat system and job mechanics
  • Evolved Mode – Focuses on deeper job identity and customization

Notably, all new jobs introduced in the expansion—one tank and one physical ranged DPS—will be exclusive to Evolved Mode.

Additional gameplay updates include:

  • Level cap increase from 100 to 110
  • New cities and regions
  • Expanded dungeons, trials, and raid content
  • A new Ultimate raid
  • PvP updates and ongoing system improvements

Beyond combat, players can expect broader system enhancements such as revamped seasonal progression, an updated Armoury system for multi-job play, and expanded character customization options.

Free Trial Expansion and Roadmap

Ahead of Evercold, Square Enix is continuing to build momentum with updates to the current game. The Free Trial will soon include the critically acclaimed Shadowbringers expansion, allowing new players access to content up through Patch 5.58 with no playtime restrictions.

Meanwhile, the Patch 7.5x roadmap outlines a steady stream of content leading into the next expansion, including new story quests, raids, and gameplay features scheduled throughout 2026.

Nintendo Switch 2 Version Announced

In another major reveal, Square Enix confirmed that Final Fantasy XIV will be coming to the Nintendo Switch 2 in August 2026. The release will include an early access period to test server stability before full launch, expanding the game’s already massive player base across even more platforms.

A Growing Legacy

With over 30 million registered accounts worldwide, Final Fantasy XIV continues to stand as one of the most successful MMORPGs of all time. The announcement of Evercold signals Square Enix’s ongoing commitment to evolving the game with ambitious storytelling, cross-media collaborations, and large-scale gameplay innovations.

As Fan Festival 2026 continues, players can expect more details, live gameplay showcases, and deeper dives into what Evercold will bring when it launches in early 2027.
