Mother’s Day may have already passed, but it got me thinking about something video games don’t get enough credit for how well they explore family, protection, and parenthood.
While games are often known for action, competition, and huge boss fights… some of the most emotional stories in gaming come from characters simply trying to protect the people they care about.
Whether it’s surviving the apocalypse, guiding a child through danger, or literally keeping cubs alive in the wilderness, these games prove that “protecting someone” can sometimes be more intense than saving the world.
3. Mia Winters – Resident Evil Series

The Resident Evil series is usually known for monsters, bio-weapons, and survival horror, but Resident Evil Village surprisingly centers much of its story around family.
Mia Winters may not always be physically present throughout the game, but the entire story revolves around protecting their daughter, Rose. The game constantly explores themes of parenthood, sacrifice, and what people are willing to endure for their children.
Even the villains reflect twisted versions of family and motherhood, giving Village a much more emotional core than many players expected from a horror game.
2. Clementine – The Walking Dead

Clementine’s journey across The Walking Dead series is one of the best examples of character growth in gaming.
Players first meet her as a frightened child being protected by Lee Everett. But over time, the series slowly transforms Clementine into the protector herself as she takes care of AJ in an unforgiving post-apocalyptic world.
What makes her role so powerful is that the player helps shape how she raises AJ through difficult choices and moral decisions. By the final season, Clementine feels less like a survivor and more like a parent trying to prepare a child for a dangerous world.
1. Amicia de Rune – Plague Tales Series

Few characters in gaming carry as much emotional responsibility as Amicia de Rune.
Throughout A Plague Tale, Amicia is forced to grow up quickly as she protects her younger brother Hugo during one of the darkest and most brutal journeys in modern gaming. While she isn’t Hugo’s mother, she often feels like one acting as his protector, guide, and emotional support while the world around them falls apart.
What makes Amicia stand out is how human she feels. She becomes exhausted, overwhelmed, angry, and terrified, but she continues pushing forward because Hugo depends on her.
That constant struggle between survival and protecting family is what makes A Plague Tale so emotionally powerful and why Amicia deserves recognition as one of gaming’s strongest protective characters.
Video games have become far more than simple action adventures or power fantasies.
Some of the most memorable stories in gaming come from characters trying to protect the people they care about even when the world around them is falling apart. Whether it’s surviving impossible odds, guiding a child through danger, or sacrificing everything for family, these characters remind players that strength isn’t always about combat or abilities.
Sometimes, the strongest characters are the ones willing to keep going for someone else.
And while Mother’s Day may be over, these characters and the stories built around them are a reminder of how powerful protective and parental roles can be in gaming.
