Jagex has released its Combat Modernisation update for RuneScape, marking the latest milestone in the MMORPG’s year-long “Road to Restoration” initiative during its 25th anniversary celebration.
The update reworks RuneScape’s three core combat styles — melee, ranged, and magic — making them more intuitive and easier to learn as players progress. The overhaul also aims to create stronger synergy between abilities while simplifying overall combat flow without sacrificing depth.
Community-Driven Changes
The launch follows three months of Combat Modernisation beta periods, during which the RuneScape community provided feedback that directly influenced the final release. Adjustments were made to ability power levels, timing corrections, and perk refinements based on player input.
Jagex has positioned the update as a foundational improvement intended to modernize combat while preserving the identity of RuneScape’s long-standing systems.
The Road to Restoration
Combat Modernisation is part of RuneScape’s broader Road to Restoration initiative, first announced during January’s RuneScape Ahead presentation. The year-long plan focuses on refining core systems and improving overall player experience.
New User Interface
Completed in January, the updated UI improves menu clarity, visibility, and overall navigation.
Early Game Rebalancing
Released in February, this update reworked early progression, adjusting skill balance for hunting, thieving, farming, and herblore. Early quests such as Cook’s Assistant and Sheep Shearer were also refined to improve onboarding for new players.
DailyScape Changes
Coming in March, Jagex plans to remove many daily login activities that were identified by the community as feeling chore-like and offering disproportionate rewards compared to core gameplay.
Environment Refreshes
Ongoing updates will focus on refreshing the surface world of Gielinor to create greater visual consistency across the game’s regions.
Player Avatar Overhaul
A two-part Player Avatar Update launching in spring and autumn will deliver the most significant visual update to player characters in over a decade, increasing fidelity and detail.
RuneMetrics Pro Becomes Free
This spring, RuneMetrics — a tool for tracking XP and wealth gains — will become free for all RuneScape Members.
RuneScape is currently available on PC, Steam, iOS, and Android, with full cross-platform progression between PC and mobile.
