Best Starting Class in Final Fantasy XIV for Beginners

One of the biggest choices in Final Fantasy XIV — also known as FF14 — is choosing your starting class and eventually your job.

If you’re reading this hoping to find the absolute easiest job in the game… well, the answer really depends on how you like to play. Every class in FF14 has its own strengths, weaknesses, mechanics, and playstyle. Some jobs are easier for beginners to understand, while others may take more practice to master.

This list will only cover the starter classes and jobs available during character creation. Unlockable jobs such as Final Fantasy XIV’s Dark Knight, Reaper, Sage, Gunbreaker, and other expansion jobs will not be included.

Classes

Healer

Healers are responsible for keeping the party alive during battles. While tanks take most of the damage, healers make sure everyone stays healthy by restoring HP, removing negative effects, and helping recover from mistakes during fights.

In later content, healers are also expected to deal damage whenever the party is safe, making the role more active than many new players might expect.

Healer Cons

DPS

DPS, short for “Damage Per Second,” are the damage dealers of the party. Their main job is to defeat enemies as quickly as possible while avoiding incoming attacks and mechanics.

Most players in Final Fantasy XIV tend to start as a DPS class because the role is usually easier to learn compared to tanking or healing. DPS jobs are also very diverse, ranging from swords and spears to bows, magic, and even pet-based combat.

There are three main types of DPS jobs:

  • Melee DPS
  • Physical Ranged DPS
  • Magical Ranged DPS

DPS Pros

  • Highest damage output in the game
  • Large variety of playstyles
  • Usually easier for beginners to start with
